Super Robot Wars A is a 2001 GBA tactical RPG published by Banpresto and the first entry in the Super Robot Wars series to appear on a handheld platform. Players choose from four original protagonists — Tetsuya, Mitsuki, Lamia, or Axel — and embark on a crossover story drawing from Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083, ∀ Gundam, Mashin Hero Wataru, G Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and more. Turn-based strategy gameplay features unit upgrades, Spirit commands, and combination attacks, with branching story routes and a wealth of hidden units providing strong replay value. The game was later remade as Super Robot Wars A Portable on PSP with an overhauled system and additional mechs, and is regarded as the franchise's definitive handheld foundation.
