Dig Dug

Namco's 1982 arcade puzzle-action classic, ported to the NES in 1985. Players control Dig Dug, a subterranean digger who burrows through underground layers and eliminates enemies by pumping them full of air until they burst, or by dropping rocks to crush multiple foes for bonus points. The round Pookas and fire-breathing Fygars can transform into ghosts and phase through the soil to pursue the player when trapped. The tunnel network evolves dynamically as players dig, and the game's clean ruleset combined with strategic path-planning made Dig Dug the defining classic of the golden-age digging genre.
