Chuka Taisen

A 1989 NES port of Taito's 1988 horizontal scrolling arcade shooter, developed by Now Production. The hero is Daisen, a Chinese celestial child in a red belly-band riding a cloud — drawn from the world of Journey to the West — soaring through the heavens, dragon palaces, and demon lairs to battle a menagerie of monsters. Daisen's weapon is a spat fireball; power-ups upgrade it to a three-way spread shot or a piercing beam and summon wingmen escorts. Each stage ends with a massive ink-wash style boss set to traditional pentatonic BGM. Chuka Taisen hides genuinely punishing bullet-hell difficulty beneath its charming exterior and stands as one of the earliest standout Eastern-themed shooters.
