About this game
Developed by ZAP and published by Natsume in 1989, Tonfuu — full title Chuugoku Janshi Story: Tonfuu — is one of the few Famicom mahjong titles built around Chinese rather than Japanese riichi rules. Players enter a tournament as a mahjong player, facing CPU opponents in one-on-one matches and advancing by winning a required number of hands. Supported hands include Pure Flush, All Triplets, and Thirteen Orphans. The interface pairs a full-screen opponent portrait with a tile display above, and each match opens with a brief character profile. The Chinese ruleset and tournament format set it well apart from the dominant riichi-style games on the platform, marking it as one of Natsume's more experimental early releases.
