Tunnel Warfare

Based on the celebrated 1965 Chinese war film of the same name, Tunnel Warfare is an NES action game in which players take the role of an anti-Japanese militia fighter during World War II. Combat alternates between above-ground village settings and an underground tunnel network, where the player can duck below the surface to evade enemy artillery and then resurface to launch counterattacks at the right moment. The game blends shooting with tactical use of the tunnels, recreating the guerrilla warfare spirit of the original film. Its distinctly patriotic theme and grounding in Chinese wartime history give it a character unlike most NES titles.
